Oporto Metro – Works Supervision of the Network Implementation

Client: Metro do Porto, S.A.

Period: 2005 - 2012

Description:

The Oporto Light Metro System corresponds to a new concept of public transport, efficient, comfortable and safe, associating speed (up to 80 km/h) and operability to a strong urban and landscape renovation component. The network comprises 70 km of lines, 20 km of which are built from scratch (7 km underground, through the city centre) and the other 50 km result from an existing rail line adaptation through the implementation of a completely new infrastructure. The system includes 74 stations, 11 of which are underground. The project involved extensive civil, track installation and adaptation, signalling installation, telecommunication systems installation and testing, electrification installation (overhead power supply) and testing works.  It required the coordination and conciliation of interests of six municipalities, utility providers and residents’ associations. Construction was undertaken bearing in mind urban renovation, landscaping, urban heritage preservation and the comfort and minimum disruption to the population.
